Who’s Having a Baby This Year??

Who do you know that’s having a baby this year? Tell them about our Parent-Doula Meet & Greet July 10th, 2010! Wouldn’t they be interested in a proven way to reduce the rate of interventions and use of drugs in their birth?

Women birthing with doulas, professional labor assistants who offer emotional & physical support to the birthing family, have been found to request 60% fewer epidurals, have 25% shorter labors, and have 50% less cesarean surgical births!  Both parents frequently report a more positive view of both their baby and their marriage when doulas are include in their births!  Along with many other benefits, these positive affects alone typically result in quicker recoveries, fewer breastfeeding challenges, less postpartum depression and strong bonding for mother & child, easing the stress of the early days of parenting.

The “Parent-Doula Meet & Greet” is a quarterly event here at Indigo Forest, a three year old Ann Arbor boutique & class studio which nurtures healthy families and lifestyles.  It provides an efficient way for parents and doulas to find each other; beginning with a brief review of the benefits of doulas,  parents then get a chance to hear local doulas take several minutes each to introduce themselves, and mingle together over tea and snacks.

Hosted by us, right here at The Indigo Forest, 4121 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor, MI  48103.  Saturday, July 10th, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm.  This event is Free, although pre-registration of both doulas & parents strongly are encouraged, as this is a ‘first come/first serve’ event.  734.994.8010.

Safe Play Sand

Until my research-oriented husband brought me up to date, I had no idea that SAND could be anything but safe, did you?   He found that the sandbox sand generally available has notable levels of airborne asbestos, silica, and other environmental contaminants, (elements you do NOT want your child breathing in as they pour the sand, especially with the history of asthma we had in our family!) and then went to work finding a ‘safe’ source. The result five years ago was the biggest dump truck in the universe showing up with their minimum order – 18 cubic yards!   Our uber-sandbox held 6 c.yds., (6′x8′x 4′ deep!), and then he began the selling off of the remainder.  This now-annual event allows a wide range of local families to stock their sandboxes for the year with the cleanest, safest sand available!

You probably are familiar with the wonderful benefits of a sandbox for your little and middle-size ones – once you supervise them past the tasting stage :) , they will pour, pound, pat, scoop, shovel, swirl, mound, fill, dig, push, sculpt and craft for endless happy hours.  Since kids are wiring their computers (brains) with every tactile & sensory experience they can find, sand delights & serves them at every level.  So will your tired toes when you can’t resist scrunching them in too!  (I speak from experience.)

So-Today, Friday 6/11, the big ‘ole dump truck is going to dump a ginormous load (as my kids say) of this washed & naturally-occurring sand in our parking lot (no sharp, dust-generating ‘fractured edges’ of commercially ground construction sand here!).  You can email Chris (ccb1@umich.edu) directly to reserve your own little summer oasis  (and arrange a p/u time), or leave a msg. at Indigo Forest for a call-back (734.994.8010).  Five-gallon buckets to multiple yards, word-of-mouth already has about half of it pre-sold, and it’s expected to be gone by mid-next week.  We really want our loyal Indigo Forest fans to have the best, so don’t dilly-dally if you want a sandbox this summer!
